Besides the pvc pipes and styrofoam base, the whole of the shanties are made from card board salvaged from the recycling bin. Cereal boxes mostly. I used a minimal amount of plasti-card, plastic tubing, and latch hook grating. The details are just junk from the bottom of the bits box.

These are awesome. I especially like the multilevel shanty town. Looks great. These will look fantastic when they are all painted up. Great work. Can't wait to see more!

I'm glad you like them. The designs are rendered in CAD. Then feed into a CNC machine which cuts out all the parts by itself. It's like a giant robot router. We are planning to make these and sell them as affordable, easy to assemble and nice looking, model kits. As we get the designs worked out I'll post some more pics and info. The material is MDF. Medium density fiberboard. It is sturdy, has a nice weight and sticks together securely with a little wood glue. Give us a week or two to dig out from under all this snow and put some packages together and you should be able to purchase some from us if you are interested.

Pretty snazzy looking buildings you've got there. Do I understand correctly that you're making templates by which to cut others? Any chance you plan to put those templates on the web somewheres? Or go into more detail about the type of wood you're using?

I'd be really interested in piecing together some buildings like that for my table as well... very cool.

Personally, I love it. How on earth did you do this?
I mean, getting the foam into a shape you could actually use, like the head, or arms?
I'd love to see a tutorial on it, or some tips on how to do one of my own.

I must say I'm pretty excited about my first real comment here on the blog. Thank you for posting.

It took me about and hour to get it to the middle stage shown in the WIP pics and another 1.5 hours to do the detail work (teeth, horns and sword). This was a real experiment, just to see if I could do it. I'd like the next one to be a bit smaller, with hopefully even more detail. Would you like me to try and make a tutorial?

You know, I'm not on the love it or hate it bandwagon. It's a decent looking model, but not spectacular.

Looks aside though, I'm floored by the model in general. The creativity and skill it took to create this are out of this world! I've used this stuff before for some odd jobs (such as keeping a headlight in after a car crash), so I know that it's not very user friendly and expands like crazy. To get this level of detail from a simple can of spray foam is inspiring. This is certainly something to be proud of. All in all, how long did it take you to complete?
